We are excited to announce that Janet Bishop will become the next A. J. McFadden Dean of The Claremont Colleges Library.  Janet joins us from the University of Minnesota Libraries, where she serves as the Associate University Librarian for Content and Collections.

Reporting to the University Librarian and Dean of Libraries at Minnesota, Janet provides leadership to 40 staff in the development, acquisition, management, and preservation of the Libraries’ electronic resources and general collections.  She has oversight of her division’s collection budget of over $18 million.  As a member of the Libraries’ executive-level Cabinet, she has input into strategic initiatives, the realignment/reimagining of services and activities, and funding priorities.  She also has been engaged in the Big Ten Academic Alliances’ consortial activities.  These include the analysis of shared print and electronic collection development decisions and examination of ways to support open access initiatives through shared collection investments.

Prior to her work at the University of Minnesota, Janet was the Coordinator for Archives and Special Collections and Associate Professor at Colorado State University (CSU).  In this capacity she had oversight for the CSU Archives and Special Collections department, the Libraries Preservation Lab and the Archives Annex offsite facilities.  Janet also has held several other library positions at Seattle University and the University of Washington Libraries.

Throughout her career, Janet has made it a priority to engage and mentor director reports and her departmental/divisional staff.  This philosophy and her collaborative mindset stood out to everyone who met her throughout the search process.

Janet earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from Princeton University, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Washington, as well as a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Her appointment begins on September 16, 2019.  She will report both to Amy Marcus-Newhall, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Scripps College, and to Stig Lanesskog, Chief Executive Officer of The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS), and work closely with the Academic Deans Committee and the Faculty Library Advisory Committee.
