Library building closed except for Connection. See COVID-19 Service Updates and Resources

As a first step towards reopening the Library building to our users, we will begin to offer in-person appointments to Claremont Colleges faculty (starting April 15, 2021) and graduate students (starting May 3, 2021) who wish to browse the stacks.

If you know specific titles you want to borrow, we encourage you to use our contactless walk-in and curbside pickup services.

As a pilot for a phased approach to reopening, we will first offer browsing appointments to current Claremont Colleges faculty and graduate students. The small scale of the pilot is intended to ensure the safety of onsite Library staff and any others in the building.

We expect to expand this service to undergraduates and staff in the coming months. Keep an eye on our website for updates.

What to Expect

Browsing the stacks can only be done by making an appointment. No exceptions will be made.

  • You may book an appointment for 30 or 60 minutes
  • You are limited to one appointment per week
  • You may make an appointment between 12 hours and 2 weeks in advance
  • You must use a Claremont Colleges email address to make an appointment
  • When making an appointment, you will be asked to agree to a list of safety and building protocols
  • You will receive an automated confirmation email once your appointment is made. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact us at If you arrive at the building and your appointment is not in our system, you will be turned away and asked to reschedule.
  • If you attempt to make an appointment but are not yet eligible (i.e., you are not a Claremont Colleges faculty member or graduate student), your appointment will be cancelled.
  • Please arrive alone, if at all possible. If you must bring someone (i.e., a dependent), they will need to follow the same safety protocols and stay with you at all times.
  • Wait in the South Entrance hallway, just outside the double glass doors into the Library. A Library staff member will let you in at the start of your appointment time.
  • Have your Claremont Colleges ID ready to show to the Library staff member.
  • Follow the instructions provided by Library staff and the safety protocols you agreed to when making the appointment.
Safety Protocols

All visitors to the library will be asked to agree to the following protocols before their appointment:

  • Not to enter the Library building if you are feeling sick or have any symptoms of Covid-19.
  • Follow required safety protocols while in the Library building: wear a mask at all times, stay at least 6 feet away from others, sanitize my hands at the beginning of my appointment.
  • Complete my home campus’ required health safety screening protocols before entering the Library building (see links below).
  • Notify the Contact Tracing Team at your home campus if you contract COVID-19, so contact tracing can be performed.

7C Health Screening Protocols & Procedures

Building Protocols

All visitors to the library will be asked to follow these protocols while in the building:

  • Refrain from entering designated “Staff Only” areas of the Library
  • Place any books handled on a blue book cart for quarantining (in adherence with REopening Archives, Libraries, and Museums and American Library Association’s recommendations).
  • Books available through the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service cannot be checked out due to our participation in this program. If you bring the books down to the Services Desk you will not be able to leave the building with them.
  • Do not eat, drink, or loiter (e.g., sit and read) in the building.
  • Please leave the Library building when finished browsing the stacks, either before or at the end of the appointment time.
Technology in the Building

All Library technology and equipment is currently unavailable to visitors (e.g., printers, scanners, computers, microfilm readers). You may request our assistance with scanning at the end of your appointment or at any other time through our Scanning Request Form.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their laptops, tablets, and mobile devices to use while in the building (WIFI will be available).
